In 2019, BCG and Grundfos launched ‘project Green Constitution’ with the ambitious goal of adding climate and environmental provisions to the Danish Constitution. Since then the project has grown to a coalition of 35+ organizations. Today they launch the first publication on the first provision – “The Right to Clean Drinking Water”.
Clean drinking water is the source of all life on earth, and we pride ourselves on the Danish quality.
A cold glass of water, a toilet flush, laundry, dishes, gardening, and industrial production – in all cases we use the same high quality of water in Denmark, stemming from our solid groundwater reserves.
But we can no longer take our clean water for granted. Great challenges lurk, beneath the surface.
A new analysis from BCG shows that more than half of Danish groundwater samples contain pesticide residues, and every fourth sample contains residues above the permitted limit value. In 2019, Danish waterworks reported as many as 250 polluted drinking water drillings in a single year. Before this, the number has usually been around 30.
This pollution will likely continue and worsen in the years to come.
Therefore, project Green Constitution (Grøn Grundlov) wants to protect Danes’ access to clean drinking water.
The Green Constitution
Project Green Constitution was launched by BCG and Grundfos in December 2019 with the ambitious goal of adding concrete climate- and environmental provisions to the Danish constitution (Danmarks Riges Grundlov).
Since then the project has become a coalition of 35+ organizations, including The Danish society for Nature Conservation, DanChurchAid, CARE Denmark, green startups, and many more.
Today the Green Constitution launch their first publication and analysis on the first provision ‘The Right to clean Drinking Water”.
Adding the protection of water to the constitution will secure this vital resource in a future with a global shortage of clean drinking water.
New laws and measures will not be able to overrule this protection, and the courts can hold politicians, society, and companies accountable for complying with this provision.
